Abstract

The aim of this work was to design a pair of cricket gloves to prevent a professional batsman's fingers from fracture. Opinion of physiotherapists, experts and professional players was collated to determine the magnitude of the problem. The selection and performance of appropriate foams for use in the cricket gloves was considered, aided by the Cambridge Material Selector. Initial design ideas for inserts were suggested and a design evaluation conducted with Dunlop Slazenger International Ltd.. This resulted in the development of various two finger protective inserts, of hinged or pre-bent design, which could be fitted into the glove. Preferred designs were manufactured at Cambridge University Engineering Department's workshop. These were tested at the company and a final design was recommended.
