Abstract

This paper draws together research conducted at Cambridge University Engineering Department, discussing the aeromechanics and aerodynamics of tennis balls. It concludes that initial unsteady motion effects are negligible and that variation in the coefficient of restitution of the ball/racket system might be an effective solution to ball speed reduction during tennis serves. It recommends the specification of a comprehensive design parameter set, with particular reference to the importance of aerodynamic data.
